The 2016 edition once again treats listeners to an incredible diversity of styles and ambiences, ranging from jazz-funk to samba-rock, disco, soul, and reggae. This in a year that football fans will remember as that of the Euro Cup in France, and music fans, when Bowie, Maurice White, Bernie Worrel, and Prince all left us too soon to search for eternal inspiration in the great musical beyond.  

Everyone pulls in the same direction to create an album where musical styles form criss-crossing hybrid blends or else strike sumptuous poses in their original guise. Wild jazz appears side by side with Japanese-sounding strings, spacy rock gazes down from the stratosphere at pure premium hip hop and its dominant beats, electro funk slugs it out with afro on the dancefloor, while urban Western brass throws down the gauntlet to post-apocalyptic synthesizers that would set John Carpenter’s moustache aquiver. Dense, rich and eclectic, ETERNAL is above all an ambitious record, an album with no restrictions on form or length, every track a door into a different universe from the one before.

On this new album of nine tracks, it’s all composed by Florian Pellissier, except 2 covers. The starting point of the work was at the tribute to South African Jazz made by the quintet during the Jazz à Vienne festival. Florian has composed several pieces for that evening and that gave him the direction for the new disc. This is a free interpretation of this South African music (including Dollar brand discs) and the result remain personnal and finally less African. The two covers were : a tribute to Horace Silver (a reference to Pellissier) and a standard jazz “what a difference a day Makes” with participation Leron Thomas at the sing and the trumpet. The 60s aesthetic of their sound, including a Harold McNair cover as well as a jazz standard, the only vocal track of the album, luxuriating in the presence of guest Leron Thomas, is in perfect tune with the reflective grazing of the does, nos Biches Bleues.

For this new album, Guts decided to come back to his Hip Hop roots (he created the french rap Band Alliance Ethnik in the 90’s) and invited quality MCs and singers to join him in the studio. Deep spiritual jazz recorded in Germany, performed by Jamaican born saxophone player Fitz Gore and his international group The Talismen, featuring a.o. bassist Gérard Ebbo from Morocco and drummer Philippe Zobda-Quitman from Martinique. This is the first reissue of their second album, released in 1976 by the small private label GorBra from Bonn, including “Delilah” and “Requiem For Julian Cannonball Adderley”. The rare LP comes in a newly mastered version with original cover design and sleeve notes. Fitz Gore`s music is full of tremendous tension and movement between deep seriousness, inwardness and humility; it affects your life, it liberates and heals.

Jazz Is Dead is Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's joint venture project where for #5 they recruit Spiritual Funk/Jazz Innovator Doug Carn for this distinctive Jazz-Hip Hop-Funk-Noir Record. Carn's newest project, his entry in the Jazz Is Dead album series helmed by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, takes his unique and timeless art and places it within the context of a musical culture that has always taken cues from his ‘70s classics. There's no mistaking the musical mind that created legendary albums like Infant Eyes and Adam's Apple, but the encounter of that with the distinctive jazz-hip hop-funk-noir that is the Younge/Muhammad/JID trademark creates something worthy of comparison to Carn's past work but which could only have been made right now. One can detect nods to musical motifs by Carn's jazz peers that have served as frequent sample fodder, but his compositional and improvisational integrity remain indisputable throughout.
