Released in 1956, that album would become Garner’s defining work: a crossover hit and a pianistic touchstone, despite a murky sound quality that reflected its makeshift origins. “Concert by the Sea” was a cornerstone of his transcendent pop career, along with his lush romantic ballad “Misty,” which became a standard and, for Johnny Mathis, a calling card. From the 1950s into the ’70s, Garner was one of a handful of jazz musicians known to a mainstream audience: a sterling concert attraction; a show-business personality; a favorite guest on more than one edition of the “Tonight” show. (Steve Allen and Johnny Carson were both fans.) In 1971, Clint Eastwood made his film-directing debut with “Play Misty for Me,” a thriller in which he plays a disc jockey, and Garner’s song plays a pivotal role.

180 Gram Gatefold LP Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane’s September 15, 1957 studio session in Hackensack, New Jersey produced all of the material for the legendary album Blue Train. The LP marked the first time that Trane was given the opportunity to select his own sidemen for a date. He made good use of his newfound freedom, enlisting the support of trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. When asked in a 1960 radio interview which was his favorite of all the albums he recorded up to that point, Coltrane was quick to reply: Blue Train. Two selections presenting Trane in a quartet format backed by the same rhythm section (originally issued on Paul Chambers’ LP Chambers’ Music) have been added as a bonus.

Nat King Cole Sings For Two In Love was Cole's first album made specifically for the new 12" LP format. Like Frank Sinatra, with whom he shared a record company (Capitol) and a conductor (Nelson Riddle), Cole made a thematic album with Sings For Two In Love, in this case a set of 12 romantic ballads. It's another album that examples the lengthy musical partnership between the singer Nat 'King' Cole and his most frequent musical facilitator Nelson Riddle. Ballads Of The Day could have been called something like Nat King Cole's Greatest Hits 1953-1955, since it is actually a compilation assembled from recent single releases. All tracks on this 2-LP are original remastered recordings.

'Love Is The Thing' is a 1957 album released by American jazz vocalist Nat King Cole. It is the first of four collaborations between Cole and influential arranger Gordon Jenkins. Here we have ballads about the melancholy side of love, although any sadness is undercut by the optimistic tone in Cole's voice. 'The Very Thought of You' is tender and gentle. Highlights include "Stardust", "But Beautiful", "This Is All I Ask", and "The More I See You."
