Compilation, Remastered, Mono. Dinah Washington was an American singer and pianist, who has been cited as "the most popular black female recording artist of the '50s". In the 1950s and early 1960s before her death, Washington occasionally performed on the Las Vegas Strip. This album has many of singer Dinah Washington's most exciting jazz performances. Tony Bennett said of Washington during a recording session with Amy Winehouse: She'd just come in and put the suitcases down. And she'd say "I'm here, boss". And she'd stay as long as she wanted. And all the kids in all the shows on the Strip would come that night. They'd hear that she's in town and it would be packed just for her performance.

Reissue. In the 1950s and '60s, he typically sounded like a version of Thelonious Monk with the brightness turned way down, set against a powerful rhythmic sense. "Cat Walk" and "Minor Pulsation" on this record are classic examples of Waldron's style. Waldron mostly recorded for Prestige/New Jazz during this period, so it's refreshing hearing him on Bethlehem with a bit more lifelike piano sound.

Jazz

"The World of Cecil Taylor" was the pianist’s first LP for the short-lived Candid label. Cecil Taylor’s work for the label took place during the first years of his career as a leader. At the time he taped The World of Cecil Taylor, he had only recorded four albums: Jazz Advance (1956), Looking Ahead! (1958), Hard Driving Jazz (1958) with John Coltrane, and Love for Sale (1959). Some of the numbers the pianist chose to release were improvised one-takes, while others were tried various times. The most notable case is that of “Air”, for which 29 takes were needed in order to produce the master take approved by Taylor. Jazz Soul Hard Bop

'At Club Baby Grand' is a live album by American jazz organist Jimmy Smith featuring performances recorded at Club Baby Grand in Wilmington, Delaware in 1956 and originally released in 2 volumes. This is the organist at his raw, jawdropping best. You really do get the feeling of what those original jazz fans and curiosity seekers must have felt when first going to a Jimmy Smith show - the Charlie Parker of the organ. Also make no mistake, this is the Jimmy Smith show, and guitarist Thornel Schwartz and drummer Donald Bailey are simply along for the ride. Smith is bursting out with amazing rapid runs on the B-3, filling the air from one end of the room to the other as only he could.

From its earliest recordings at Paris’ Salle Playel in June of 1954 (with Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Isola on drums), Gerry Mulligan’s (April 6, 1927-January 20, 1996) outstanding piano-less quartet with valve-trombone virtuoso Bob Brookmeyer (December 19, 1929-December 15, 2011) was performing some of the most intelligent and tasteful material of any small band in jazz.

Jazz Soul

Compilation, Remastered Historically, The Jazz Crusaders were a nucleus of four in search of a bass player. Wayne Henderson, Wilton Felder, Joe Sample and Stix Hooper, were working together in various bands since their junior high school days in Houston, Texas circa 1953. After leaving Texas and settling in Los Angeles, they made their first album, Freedom Sound, in 1961, and started musicians and critics talking about the aggressive new group from Texas, firmly rooted in tradition and growing inevitably from the blues. The second album, Lookin Ahead, definitely shows that The Jazz Crusaders were not merely a group of upstart youngsters blowing a library of well-arranged tunes, but a unit that brought a remarkable degree of maturity and ensemble rapport to their collective playing.

Limited Edition of 500 copies, Reissue, 180 gram, includes 2 bonus tracks. The singer’s first major LP release, Songs from the Heart, was recorded in New York in October, 1955 and featured Hartman backed by trumpeter Howard McGhee, pianist Ralph Sharon, bassist Jay Cave and drummer Christy Febbo. The album, presented here, included a unique blend of classics from the jazz and pop idiom. As is often the case with albums of rare brilliance, it is difficult to pick out any particular highlights. Cole Porter’s “Down in the Depths (of the 90th Floor)” certainly receives the most unusual treatment, with the rhythm section seamlessly switching between a Latin groove and a steady swing feel.
