Ash differs from their self-titled first album for its more societal themes, features from high-profile artists such as Kamasi Washington, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Chilly Gonzales, and its upbeat tone.

Idris Muhammad recorded his classic jazz-funk album Turn This Mutha Out in 1977 for the Kudu label. Some great session musicians accompanied him and the album has that David Matthews signature disco-jazz-funk sound. It was well received in the UK, most notably for the opening track Could Heaven Ever Be Like This, an undisputed classic.

Idris Muhammad was an American jazz drummer who recorded extensively with many musicians, including Bob James, Pharoah Sanders, John Scofield, George Benson, Lonnie Smith and Tete Montoliu. Power of Soul is his best known album and is one of the reasons that Idris Muhammad is regarded as the drumming king of groove.
