Sonny Rollins’ legendary LP, A Night at the Village Vanguard, marked the second album presenting the saxophonist in a pianoless trio format (following his celebrated initial trio recording Way Out West). The Village Vanguard has been the seat of live jazz since the 1940s. Ninety-one live recordings have been made at the Vanguard between 1957 and 2001, chronicling the whole of the history of jazz. Rollins’ A Night at the Village Vanguard was the first live recording ever made at the club. A different version of “A Night in Tunisia” showcasing Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet has been added as a bonus. One of the most renowned jazz photographers of all time, Francis Wolff (1907-1971) was also a record company executive and producer, whose skills were essential to the success of the Blue Note record label.

Open Sesame was the trumpeter’s first project with pianist McCoy Tyner, who during the same month would perform his first gig ever with the John Coltrane Quartet (at the Jazz Gallery, in New York). It was also the first collaborative recording between Hubbard and saxophonist Tina Brooks, who would only record together on one other occasion, for Tina’s own album True Blue, recorded less than a week later on June 25, 1960. Even though many of his previous works as a sideman were important, Open Sesame marked the beginning of Hubbard’s career as his own man, and helped him to overcome his major influences and establish his own musical voice.

Composer of “Blue Bossa,” one of the most popular jazz standards of all time, trumpeter Kenny Dorham (1924-1972) was a rather neglected and little-known figure during his lifetime. Decades later, not much has changed. Greatly overshadowed by the stardom of Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, this underrated bebop giant was nevertheless a highly talented musician who performed with some of the most remarkable players of the era. He recorded with Bud Powell; was a regular member of the Charlie Parker quintet (they toured Paris) and replaced the late Clifford Brown in the Max Roach quintet in 1956. Presented here is his splendid quintet LP Inta Somethin’, on which he shares the frontline with alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, with whom he would collaborate on two further occasions, the 1962 LPs Matador and Hipnosis.

Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson was born in Badin, North Carolina, on November 1, 1926 (he is 92 at this writing). Best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to playing the alto saxophone, in his formative years he was, as many of the bebop era were, heavily influenced by Charlie Parker. This release presents Donaldson’s complete original LP Blues Walk, presenting the saxophonist as the only horn in a quintet that also features Ray Barretto on congas.
